Acid Wash

Acid washing a swimming pool refers to the process of draining the pool water and using acid to strip away a thin layer of plaster in order to expose a new, cleaner layer of plaster underneath.

In order for acid washing to e a cost effective solution to a dirty swimming pool and swimming pool water, t should only really be done for certain reasons.  Acid washing can be done if the winterization of the pool was done improperly and in the spring, the floor of the swimming pool can not be seen.  Acid washing can also be done if algae growth is a reoccurring problem, and algae buds seem to pop up overnight no matter what other treatments are done.  Because acid washing removes a layer of plaster, and can be quite costly and time-consuming, regular chemical methods of treating the water are generally tried first to repair problems.  Swimming pool service professionals are trained on how to acid wash swimming pools, as acid is a dangerous chemical.  It is not recommended that pool owners try to acid wash their swimming pools.  If they do, however, they must read all directions carefully, and have someone nearby at all times.  Swimming pool owners and professionals must also check with local town ordinances regarding the emptying of the pool water and limitations in that area.  Vinyl-lined swimming pools can not be acid washed, however a vinyl-lined pool may be emptied and scrubbed using various detergents and chemicals designed specifically for vinyl liners.
