Aquapedia → Hot Tubs
Hot Tubs Hot tubs are smaller-sized pools filled with heated water and constructed for the purpose of relaxing soaks, hydrotherapy, or massage (if the hot tub has massaging jets). Hot tubs can be located indoors or outdoors. A popular construction design of hot tubs in the past was the wooden construction. Three foot to four foot wooden staves, usually made from redwood, cedar, or teak, are held together by metal bands. Circular wooden shelves lining the inside the hot tub act as seating. Today, wooden hot tubs still exist, but one-piece designs are more popular, as they come delivered, ready to install, and are cheaper to manufacture. One-piece hot tub designs are also popularly known as Jacuzzis, home spas, and whirlpools. As technology advances, many hot tubs today come with a variety of features, such as remote control options, sound systems, and even large plasma screen televisions attached to them with DVD systems. Hot tubs can come in a variety of sizes to fit various amounts of bathers. As it is important to maintain balanced water in a swimming pool, it is just as important to maintain balanced hot tub water so as not to corrode the intricate system of plumbing for the hydrotherapy jets. Hot tubs, if used carefully, have health benefits. However, if a hot tub is not used carefully, it could become dangerous. It is advised that women who are pregnant limit their hot tub use, as well as people who drink alcoholic beverages.
