Pool Pumps
Swimming pool pumps are mechanical devices that force water flow through a swimming pool for the purpose of circulation and filtration.
Pool pumps are the heart of any swimming pool or hot tub’s filtration system. When selecting a pump for a swimming pool, it is a good rule of thumb to remember that in order to be energy efficient, it is best to install the smallest size pump necessary for the size swimming pool it is operating for. The larger the pool pump installed, the higher the energy and maintenance costs. To select the best size pool pump, a design chart from a pool supplier's can be used as a resource to help match the pump’s hydraulic attributes to the piping and other characteristics of the swimming pool. To further increase energy efficiency, it is recommended to install a timer to run the pool’s pump. Rather than running the pool pump for 4 consecutive hours (leaving the other 20 hours of the day collecting debris) try running the pump 4 times a day for an hour each time. With a timer, it will be much more doable than going out to the pool and manually turning the pump on intermittently throughout the day. Another energy efficient tip is to try not to make the pool pump work harder than necessary by keeping the filter backwashed and the intake grates clean and free of debris.
