General Pool Safety Tips
When owning a swimming pool, you must become familiar with the general pool safety tips that may prevent injury or drowning. A responsible swimming pool owner is cautious, uses common sense, and always keeps these following safety guidelines in mind:
- Water and electricity don’t mix! Keep stereos and other electrical devices away from swimming pools. Also, stay out of swimming pools during rain or lightning storms.
- Never allow anyone in your swimming pool if they have been drinking alcohol.
- Never dive into above-ground swimming pools and check the water depth of in-ground pools before diving in. Stay clear of the area around a diving board.
- If you are feeling tired or have just eaten, don’t go swimming.
- Never leave children unsupervised in or near a swimming pool. For more tips on keeping children safe around pools, please view our pool Safety for Children page.
- Attend a water rescue, first aid and CPR class. Keep all lifesaving equipment conveniently located near the swimming pool. In the case of life-threatening emergencies, every second counts.
- Exercise caution when handling and storing pool chemicals.
- Pool decks should be clear of clutter or debris.
- Pool decks should be made of a non-skid material.
- As a swimming pool owner, if you feel uncomfortable with someone’s swimming ability you have the right to insist they remain in the shallow end of the pool. Monitor such swimmers closely.
- Insist that there be no rough play in your swimming pool.
- Provide adequate lighting around your pool for safety at night.
- Make sure your swimming pool is securely fenced to prevent unauthorized use of your pool
