Aquapedia → Sand Filters
Sand Filters Sand filters are a type of swimming pool filter that uses a specially graded sand that, as the water passes through the sand filter, contaminants are trapped in the grains of sand in the filter housing. A sand pool filter will need to be backwashed as the sand filter collects more debris and the pressure rises above 8-10 psi of standard operating pressure. Backwashing rinses and repacks the sand, this procedure should be done routinely, and insufficient cleaning of the sand filter can lead to problems with the sand. The sand could form clumps produced by the degree of acidic or alkalinity of a solution {PH}. When the PH is high, calcium finds its way to the filter attaching to the sand combining with lint and hair and other debris resulting in a blockage of the filter. Further negligence of your sand pool filter might also cause the sand to furrow, the water will pass but the dirt and debris will make its way through the furrow unable to come in contact with the sand and resulting in the debris re-entering the pool water. Sand should be replaced every 4 to5 years or when the pressure gauge takes less time to rise and the need to backwash increases.
