Aquapedia → Cartridge Filters
Cartridge Filters Cartridge filters are a type of swimming pool filter thatuses a pleated paper like cartridge to trap contaminants as the water passes through it and captures the pools debris. Benefits of a pool cartridge filter are their filtering capabilities and the ease in which they are cleaned. Replacing the pool cartridge filter should be done each year which makes the pool cartridge filter more costly. Some pool cartridge filters use only one large pleated filter element, while the other pool cartridge filter uses a series of smaller pleated filter elements. There are pool filter elements you can replace and are inexpensive, but they don't last as long. Another type of pool cartridge filter is very expensive and can last for 5 years or more. Pool cartridge filters are designed to run at lower pressure than sand, this puts less pressure on the pump giving you more flow and turnover. Keep your pool cartridge filter clean to prolong its life. Cleaning is required only once or twice a year and can be done with your hose and a pressure nozzle taking care to spray between each pleat where the dirt and debris collects. A more thorough cleaning can be done with an overnight soaking in a specially formulated pool cartridge cleaner every 3-4 months. A pool cartridge filter that is in relatively good condition should be kept to use when your pool cartridge filter needs to be soaked.
