There are many reasons why water clarity is important to swimmers and pool owners. To begin with, the appearance of the water is important to people looking to swim in it. Most people do not choose to swim in unsightly, cloudy-looking water.  Another reason that water clarity is so important is for the health and safety of the water.  Cloudy water can be an indication that viruses and bacteria can be living and thriving in the swimming pool.  These viruses and bacteria can cause various types of illnesses to the eyes, ears and immune system.  If pool water is cloudy, it most likely means that sanitization levels are not where they belong and chlorine-resistant microorganisms can be present.  A third reason for keeping swimming pool water clear if for the physical safety of the swimmers in the water.  It is important that swimmers be able to see each other when looking under the water.  There have also been reported cases of struggling swimmers going undetected by lifeguards due to cloudy water conditions.
