Aquapedia → Algae
Algae Algae is microscopic forms of plant life that thrive in sunshine, and are one of the most common pool problems. Algae in and of itself is not dangerous or harmful, however it can indicate a lack of sanitizer levels in the swimming pool, which will then allow for more harmful microorganisms to live. Algae problems can occur quickly, in as little as one day if it is a bright and sunny day. Algae is referred to by its color. Green algae is the most common and fairly easily treated. Yellow algae is not as easy to treat. Black algae is the most difficult algae to treat, especially in concrete swimming pools. Pink algae is commonly called “pink algae”, but is actually a fungus that can cause a pink, white and/or gray slime. To prevent algae problems, pool water balance and sanitizer levels should be maintained. If algae has been allowed to grow in a pool, it can be a process to get rid of it, including shocking the pool, brushing the pool sides, adding an algaecide and cleaning the pool filter.
