Aquapedia → Chlorine
Chlorine Chlorine disinfects a pool by being fed into the pool water and maintained at minimum levels on a regular basis. Chlorine acts as an algaecide, an immediate and continuous sanitizer, and a strong oxidizer of unwanted contaminants and bacteria. Routine chlorination helps to prevent not only unsightly pool water, but also prevents disease-causing viruses and bacteria. Other chemicals are sold to aide in the effectiveness of chlorine, such as “shocker” which helps break up contaminates, making chlorine better able to do its job, and cyanuric acid which helps protect chlorine in outdoor pools from being destroyed by the sun’s UV rays. Chlorine should be handled with care, and directions should be followed. Chlorine and all pool chemicals should be kept out of the reach of children and animals.
