Aquapedia → Salt Chlorinators
Salt Chlorinators Salt chlorinators turn common salt into chlorine while the pool is being filtered and distribute it through the swimming pool. Salt chlorinators use a small amount of natural salt that is added to the system once or twice a year in most systems to produce chlorine and sanitize the pool water within the cell chamber of the chlorinator. Because the sanitization takes place in the cell chamber, rather than in the pool, swimmers do not need to worry about how the sanitization chemicals might be harming skin, eyes or swimwear. Another advantage to using salt chlorinators is not having to handle, measure or store chlorine or bromine. Swimmers who use salt chlorinators report that their pool has less odor, and leaves their skin feeling better than pools sanitized with chlorine. Salt chlorinators may be more expensive to purchase initially, but over time they are cheaper than using chlorine or bromine, as less chemicals are used overall.
